Sustainability at Codegarden

Sustainability at Codegarden, 2026

Sustainability at Codegarden is not something separate from the event. It is part of how we think, how we build, and how we come together as a community.

At Umbraco, we care about the world we are creating things in. That means thinking about people, the planet, and how we run our business as one connected responsibility. We are not perfect, but we are committed to doing better, step by step, together with you.

We have put care and attention into making Codegarden as sustainable as we can, and this also includes working closely with our venue and their own sustainability principles.

Get a Free Ticket to Codegarden - Just by Taking the Train!

Umbraco and the Sustainability Community Team are on a mission to make Codegarden 2026 our greenest year yet. We want to spark a movement that proves long-distance travel doesn't have to mean hopping on a plane.

To lead the way, we’re launching our first-ever sustainable travel incentive: The Green Track to Codegarden. We want to reward those who trade the airport terminal for the train tracks and help make sustainable travel the new gold standard.

The Reward: Travel Green, Attend for Free

We are looking for 10 travelers to join this initiative. If selected, you’ll receive:

  • A Free Ticket to Codegarden 2026: Already bought yours? No problem - we’ll issue a full refund!

  • VIP Visibility for your employer and yourself on our socials and a blog post.

Who Qualifies?

To keep this fair and focused on replacing short-haul flights with rail travel, this offer is specifically for those embarking on longer journeys.

Note: Travel from within Denmark or Southern Sweden is not eligible for this specific incentive. We are looking for attendees traveling from further abroad who are opting for the train over flying.

Why Make the Switch?

Choosing the rails over the runway drastically slashes your carbon footprint. For perspective, taking the train from London to Odense instead of flying reduces CO2 emissions by nearly 90%. It’s not just a trip; it’s a statement.

How to Apply

What do we require of you?

  • You’re travelling by train to Codegarden 2026 from outside Denmark and Southern Sweden.

  • You’re willing to create 1 social media post about your train travel to Codegarden. You can choose the platform!

  • Deliver a quote we can use in a blog post, or you can write the whole post with us.

To participate in this initiative, we ask you to fill in this form by Sunday 24th May. We’ll be contacting the 10 chosen participants by end of May.

♻️ Waste, materials and what you will see at the venue

At the venue you will find waste sorting stations, and we really appreciate your help using them. If you are unsure where something goes, just ask one of the Umbraco team and we will happily help you figure it out.

We try to reuse materials wherever possible, from stage elements to event setup details.

Your badge and lanyard are part of this thinking. Lanyards are made from recycled plastic, and the badges are mostly made from upcycled materials.

You will also see that even everyday items at the venue are designed with sustainability in mind. For example, coffee cups used on site are made from paper with a water based coating and FSC certified materials, designed for single use but produced with environmental considerations such as recyclability and compliance with EU food contact and packaging standards. You are also welcome to bring your own water bottle, or buy an Umbraco branded water bottle in the SWAG shop.

🌍 Energy and the venue commitment

Codegarden takes place at Øksnehallen, and we are proud to work with a venue that shares a strong focus on sustainability.

The venue operates with a clear commitment to reducing environmental impact through responsible food concepts, waste reduction, and energy conscious operations. This includes a strong focus on plant forward menus, seasonal and local ingredients, reducing food waste through smart planning and portioning, and prioritising minimal packaging and efficient energy use in the kitchen.

The venue also uses renewable electricity backed by guarantees of origin from Danish wind energy, helping ensure that the energy used for the event is documented as renewable.

🌐 Hybrid event

Codegarden is a hybrid event, which means you can join us in Copenhagen or take part online.

We love seeing people gather in person, but we also know that sometimes traveling is not the right choice, and being part of the event virtually can be just as meaningful.

🚛 Local suppliers and footprint

We work with local suppliers wherever we can. It helps reduce transport and keeps the event closer to its surroundings. It also helps us build stronger relationships with the people and places around us.

We also track the emissions connected to Codegarden to the extent that we can, so we can understand our impact better and take responsibility for what we cannot avoid.

🌱 Food and care at the venue

Food is an important part of the Codegarden experience, and our venue partner shares a strong commitment to sustainability in their food concept.

That means a focus on plant forward meals, seasonal and local ingredients, and reducing food waste through thoughtful planning. It also means using more sustainable sourcing when serving meat, prioritising organic and free range options when possible.

They also work actively to reduce food waste by using ingredients fully, reusing leftovers when possible, and designing portions carefully to avoid unnecessary waste. Packaging is kept to a minimum, and tap water is prioritised alongside fairtrade coffee and local suppliers.

The goal is simple. Good food that supports wellbeing while reducing impact.

💚 What you can do

If you want to help us make Codegarden a little lighter on the planet, here are a few simple things you can do.

  • Leave your badge and lanyard at the end of the event so we can reuse them next time (And you might win a ticket to next years Codegarden by doing so.)

  • Use the recycling stations around the venue whenever you need them

  • Refill your water bottle at the taps. Copenhagen tap water is excellent

  • Bring a reusable coffee cup if you can

  • Travel to Copenhagen in a more green way if possible

  • Bring old Codegarden swag to our Pimp My Swag station and give it new life with fresh Umbraco details

💬 Join the conversation

If sustainability is something you care about, we invite you to join the sessions that explore it further. Take the ideas with you and use them in your own work, projects, and conversations.

Small choices might not feel like much on their own, but together they shape what Codegarden becomes.
